Health and Safety
There are several key health and safety areas that will affect you after a hurricane, including water and food safety, concerns about septic tanks or fields, animals and insects and a variety of other factors. General tips can be found in the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) Guide for Staying Safe After a Storm and in the links to resources below
- Instructions for returning home after a storm from DHEC
- Boil Water Emergencies
- Indoor Mold and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Mold Information
- Protecting Pets and Information on Animals and Insects from DHEC here.
- Water and Food Safety
- Private Wells: DHEC is waiving bacteriological testing fees for private wells impacted by the flood. Residents with questions about private wells should call 1-888-761-5989. *NOTE: If the well was not flooded, the water quality is the same as before the flood. For information on wells, safety, and water testing, click here.
- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has developed guides for returning to and cleaning your home after a flood. These guides provide important tips to ensure the safety of you and your family when returning to your home: Re-entering Your Home and Flood Water Cleanup
- For information on garbage and debris disposal, visit Horry County Solid Waste Authority here.
- The South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) has provided tips for Recovering From a Disaster. The guide covers topics including paying your bills, finding a place to live, replacing lost or damaged vital documents, and safeguarding personal information in the wake of a disaster. Please call 1 (800) 922-1594 or visit www.consumer.sc.gov for additional information.
- Property Repairs: DCA recommends that residents hire either a licensed SC contractor or a contractor who has obtained the required Emergency Construction Registration from the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (LLR) for repairs. Permits may also be required from your local building department for some types of repair work. Residents can verify an individual’s contractor license through the LLR License Lookup Tool. Additionally, LLR has compiled valuable tips for obtaining property repairs after flood waters have receded.
Insurance, Tax, and Unemployment Information
National Flood Insurance Program: Policyholders should call their agent or insurance company to file a flood claim. Policyholders who need assistance contacting their insurance company can contact the NFIP Call Center at 1-800-427-4661. A flood insurance adjuster should reach out within a few days to start the claims process. After filing a flood claim, if NFIP policyholders have additional unmet needs, they are encouraged to register for disaster assistance. They may be eligible for additional funds. Individuals can register online at DisasterAssistance.gov, or by calling toll-free 1-800-621-3362 (TTY: 800-462-7585).
SC Department of Insurance: Call 803-737-6227 for any insurance related questions or view information online at www.doi.sc.gov.
Internal Revenue Service (IRS): Individuals who reside in Horry County may qualify for federal tax relief. The IRS automatically identifies taxpayers located in the covered disaster area and applies automatic filing and payment relief. Affected taxpayers who reside outside the covered disaster area must call the IRS disaster hotline at 866-562-5227 to request federal tax relief. Information and applications can be found here.
South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR): The SCDOR will work with taxpayers, on a case-by-case basis, and will waive any penalties assessed against a taxpayer who cannot meet state filing or payment requirements as a result of Hurricane Florence, not applicable to current collection matters, including payments due during the relief period under any payment plan previously entered into with the SCDOR. Visit SCDOR to apply.
